How Payments Are Processed

When you place an order using a credit card, your payment is processed in several steps before the funds are received by the merchant. This process is handled by your payment provider and includes the following stages:

1. Authorization

When you submit your payment, the payment provider contacts the card issuer to verify that the card is valid and has sufficient funds. If approved, the payment is authorized—but no money is transferred at this stage.

2. Capture

Once the payment is authorized, it must be captured. During capture, the payment details are forwarded to the acquiring bank (acquirer).

3. Clearing

The acquirer reviews the payment details, and then requests the necessary funds from the company that processes the customer’s credit card.

The acquirer processes the payment information and requests the funds from the card network. The card network forwards the transaction to the issuer. The issuer deducts a small fee and sends the remaining funds to the card network. The card network takes its fee and passes the remainder to the acquirer.

4. Funding

Finally, the acquirer deducts their fee and transfers the remaining funds to the merchant account.
